Catherine Aitken - 2006 Winner of the Gillian Purvis Award

At the preview of a third year textile show at Glasgow School of Art on 16 January 2006, Toby Paterson presented to Catherine Aitken the 2006 Award for a Fourth Year Textile Student at Glasgow School of Art. Increased to £750 in this second year of the Award, Catherine plans to spend it on materials and processes as she works towards her degree show in June 2006.

Along with her application to the Trustees, images of Catherine's work demonstrated the source of her inspiration, the relationship of water, light and reflection in the harbour in Copenhagen. Back in Glasgow, that led her to the Forth and Clyde Canal in her research and on to the translation of images from photography and drawing to fabric. Combining digital print with screen printing techniques enables the production of fabric which benefits from the complexity of image by digital methods whilst maintaining the personality of hand printed fabrics. Catherine’s work can be seen at Glasgow School of Art Degree Show at the end of June 2006.
